Although SUV, it is slowly starting to show its age amid the new crop of tech-laden connected cars. But the fans of the American brand need not worry as the carmaker is working on the next-gen Grand Cherokee, which has been spotted testing for the first time.
Expected to be built on a new platform from legendary Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, which is also a part of the FCA Group, the new Grand Cherokee is expected to be launched globally next year.
Spied with heavy camouflage, the first impressions of the exteriors show that the Grand Cherokee sports extreme cladding at the front and rear, with fake panels hiding intricate details of how the upcoming SUV would look and how its shaped. What we can make out from these images is that the SUV does have a slightly longer wheelbase compared to its predecessor (2915mm) and looks beefier as well.
No details have been revealed yet on what the new Grand Cherokee could feature on the inside. However, we expect it to get a variety of new features. We also expect the SUV to offer three-row seating due to its new platform.
While Jeep has not revealed any technical specifications of the upcoming Grand Cherokee yet, we can expect it to feature some form of electrification - starting with a mild hybrid system mated to a V6 engine. Currently, the Cherokee is offered with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, a 3.6-litre V6 petrol and a high performance 482PS/637Nm 6.4-litre, supercharged V8 petrol motor in the variant. We expect the same V8 motor to make its way to the next-gen SUV's sporty variant.
While details are still scarce, the upcoming SUV is likely to be revealed sometime around late 2020. The Jeep Cherokee is currently priced between Rs 78.88 lakh to Rs 1.14 crore (ex-showroom Delhi) in India. We expect its next iteration to be priced at a premium over its predecessor. Once launched, it is expected to take on rivals like the among other premium SUVs
