Next-Gen BMW M3 M4 To Get A Manual Gearbox

  • The manual transmission will be optional though and only available in the rear-wheel-drive variant.
  • Next-gen M3 and M4 are expected to get cosmetic enhancements inside-out, will get a larger kidney grille.
  • Both are expected to be powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six petrol engine with rear-wheel drive and AWD options.
  • Expected launch in mid-2020.

With the automobile industry leaning more towards faster, user-friendly automatic transmissions, the ancient manual transmission is very much a dying breed. Even the recently revealed Corvette C8 has ditched the manual. It looks like boss, Markus Flasch, has told a publication that the next-gen M3 and M4 will be offered with a manual transmission option. This latest news is surprising, but a welcome move from BMW to cater to those who prefer to experience more of a car's character over user-friendly gizmos.

Not much has been revealed about the next-gen M3 and M4 but spy shots of the two M coupes in camo livery reveal that they are expected to get some cosmetic revisions inside out. The obvious changes include the new BMW-signature larger kidney grille.

Under the hood, we expect the M3 and to be powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six petrol engine. It is expected to make 473PS of power which could go up to 502PS in the competition model. While rear-wheel drive variants of both the cars will be made, the more powerful variants are expected to be AWD only - a first for both the M3 and M4. The manual transmission will be limited to the rear-wheel drive variant only, while the automatic transmission will be offered on all variants.

The next-gen 'G80' M3 and M4 are expected to make their official debuts somewhere around mid-2020 internationally. While they will be offered in India almost immediately after, we are not sure if the manual-gearbox equipped variants will be offered.
