Jeep Compass PHEV Breaks Cover Gets eAWD System

Based on the Trailhawk Edition, soon to be launched in India, the Jeep Compass PHEV is powered by a new 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which, in tandem with an electric motor, has a total output of 240PS. This powertrain can propel the Compass PHEV from 0-100kmph in a smidge under 7 seconds. In the pure electric mode, the SUV has a range of upto 50km and can hit a top speed of 130kmph, according to Jeep. While the IC engine powers just the front wheels, the electric motor sends power to the rear wheels and thus, the Compass PHEV has an e-AWD system instead of a conventional AWD setup. With instant torque on tap, this system provides more precision and control for manoeuvring in rugged and low-traction terrain.
Alongside the Compass PHEV, Jeep also showcased the Renegade PHEV at Geneva. Like its elder sibling, this too gets the same hybrid powertrain option with similar performance figures as well. While we still await news on the introduction of the in India, it has been spied testing here more than once. As far as the new PHEVs are concerned, Jeep says that they will go on sale in Europe next year and will be followed by all-electric versions as well.
While not immediately, we do believe that Jeep could introduce the Compass PHEV in India as well, with possibilities of manufacturing it at FCA's facility in Ranjangaon. Hybrids in India are set to gain momentum going forward, with the introduction of CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms in 2022. Under this rule, carmakers will have to maintain a minimum standard of average fuel efficiency for cars across their portfolio. Hence, we expect carmakers to launch more hybrids and EVs along with conventionally powered cars to achieve the required targets in future.
