Toyotas Vitara Brezza To Be Launched In 2022

  • Expected to go into production in 2022 in Bengaluru plant.
  • Likely to be based on the second-gen Vitara Brezza.
  • Expect the SUV to get cosmetic tweaks in line with Toyota's design language.
  • Expected to share the same mechanicals as its Maruti counterpart.

As part of the memorandum of understanding signed by Toyota and for sharing cars, Toyota has confirmed that it will reveal a rebadged version of the Vitara Brezza in India. Expected to be launched in 2022, the revelation suggests that it might not be the current version of the SUV.

The current was launched in 2016 and will be over six years old by 2022 which is the usual life cycle of a Maruti car. This also suggests that while Maruti might already be working on the next-gen Vitara Brezza, Toyota might be intending to use the latest platform for its compact SUV. While it's too early to comment on styling, expect both SUVs to have styling cues in line with their brand's design language.

Talking about mechanicals, expect the Toyota-badged Vitara Brezza to be powered by a 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol engine from the Baleno RS and Maruti's freshly developed 1.5-litre diesel engine which will make its debut with the and the Ertiga this year. The same petrol engine could also be used by the Toyota counterpart, however, it may choose to skip on the diesel variant as it did with the Yaris in India.

When launched, the sub-four metre Toyota SUV will mark Toyota's entry into the hotly contested compact SUV segment which is currently being ruled by Maruti's own Brezza, Ford EcoSport, and Mahindra XUV3OO. Hyundai is also catching up, with a sub-4 metre SUV codenamed the QXi.

Speaking about the collaboration, Maruti will also be providing the Ciaz and Ertiga to Toyota while the first Maruti-rebadge Toyota will be the Corolla Altis.
